This model is the first new Indy car model from SMTS is several years. Mario Andretti’s STP Lotus 64 that he drove in practice for the 1969 Indy 500.
For 1969 USAC imposed additional restrictions on the turbine cars from the previous two Indy 500's that effectively rendered them uncompetitive. So the Lotus/STP entry for that year’s Indy 500 had a turbocharged Ford V8 in the back kicking out a thumping 700bhp. In practice Mario Andretti was clocked over 170 mph and then lost a wheel due to bearing failure and crashed. Mario's crash totalled the car which forced him to go to the back up Brawner Hawk for the Race. The cars were withdrawn and like other very innovative Lotus single seaters, never raced. The rest is history.
