The team was out in full force, eager to retain their lead in the USRRC points race. An unlikely competitor, an under 2.0-litre Porsche, was challenging for the title thanks only to the way points were allocated by class. On the track, however, there was no doubt: the Type 2 cars were the class of the field!
Qualifying was ruined for both cars when a Lotus 23 rolled, wiping out a major part of the session. Walt Hansgen put his Lola T70 on the pole and led the complete opening lap. On lap 2, however, one of the Type 2s slipped through into the lead and the #66 ran away with the rest of the race, rollicking home to an unchallenged victory.
The drivers, however, took turns driving both the #66 and #65 racers that day. Together with Ronnie Hissom and Bruce Jennings, the #65 car had a far more eventful race. Ultimately, the only car to fill the seven lap void between the winning Type 2 and the third place finisher was the white #65 Type 2!
Though the championship math didn't work in their favor, the 500 mile race at Road America in Elkhart Lake, WI, was all theirs. Of that there was no question!
